In March of 2014, I was 203lbs, had 3 percent body fat, ran a 4.47, benched 225 22 times and jumped a 35.5 inch vertical. Most of these numbers were personal bests for me; especially 3 percent body fat. I had never seen that many abs on my body. Now, let me tell you a secret...I wasn’t born with crazy abilities and a body that was designed from God to look like the people off of 300. I was actually pretty chubby as a kid. Looking back at my pro days, I realized 3 things that took me from where I was to where I wanted to be and how I could use this skill to become a master learner. So, my friends, here we go.
These are in no particular order.
1. Immersion
Immersion is one of the best ways to take yourself from where you are to where you want to be. When it was time for me to train for my Pro Day I had to make a choice about where I was going to train. I could have stayed at Oklahoma State, gone back to my hometown or go out of state. I knew i needed to go to place where I can eliminate distractions; if I got distracted that would limit my success. Therefore, I went to Tom Shaw in Orlando, Florida where I could fully immerse myself. I started to see results within the first week. What I realized is when this process was happening I didn’t have time for distractions and I had tremendous focus. The saying “where your focus goes that’s where energy will flow” is so true! If you haven’t accomplished whatever you are going after or aren’t learning something as fast as you would like, ask yourself if you are immersed in it. If you are distracted or you aren’t focused then you probably are not...Well, I know you’re not.
2. Nourishment
Don`t get hungry on me, Lol! I`m not necessarily talking about what you are eating. However, depending on your goal I may be talking about what you are eating. Let's get to the point. When I was training for my Pro Day at Tom Shaw I made sure I didn’t eat any junk. I ate super clean. Besides feeding myself the right food, I was feeding myself with inspirational videos, videos on how to have a successful Pro Day, reading books that pertain to my Pro Day, and I constantly asked questions. It`s a constant process of feeding myself the right things. Do we eat one healthy meal and say we are healthy? No!!!!!! Ask yourself this question: are you feeding yourself the right things to help you achieve your goal?
In my opinion, this last one might be the most important.
3. Purpose
Why are you going after what you want? That’s one of the most important questions you need to figure out, because this will drive everything else and give you power over adverse moments. When obstacles come if you don`t have a strong why, purpose, or reason then you will quit instantly. When you figure out the purpose, write it down and read over it daily to remind yourself why you are doing what you are doing. Visualize your why and make it real. Make it emotional so it sinks deep in your soul.
What are the ways you can implement this in your life?
