My change in diet

I have been through different stages of nutrition in my life.  As a kid, eating healthy wasn’t the most important thing in the world. I loved McDonalds, all the Debbie Cakes, and fried foods. Yes! All those foods sound delicious, but they don’t allow your body to perform at the highest level. When you are a teenager you don’t realize that eating healthy can either have a positive or negative effect on your body. College made me realize how important nutrition is.

When I went to college, I started to care more about my body. While there, my nutritionist used a car analogy to explain the importance of how I fueled my body. When you have a car, you put specific gas, oil, and fluids to make sure it runs properly. After being told this, I realized I hadn’t been treating my body with the proper care.  At Oklahoma State, I began to eat more intentionally and monitor what I put in my body. I ate a typical, healthy diet full of ingredients like fruit, vegetables, and lean meats.  I recognized a difference in my body. I had more energy. I recovered faster and my body fat decreased.

I went to the NFL and practiced the same eating habits. During my first year I didn’t play. Because of this, I was looking for a way to improve and get an edge on the competition during my second year. My teammate was vegan, so I was curious as to how it affected his body. I followed his lead and ate the same thing he did everyday. As couple weeks went by, I noticed a difference. I recovered even faster and had even more energy than before. This change was the edge I had been looking for!

Now I avoid most of the food I ate when I was younger. I want to fuel my body with the most strategic foods, so that I can continue to perform at the highest level. You want your car to drive properly, right? Just like you want your car to drive properly, you want your body to function as well oiled machine. For me to perform at this high level, my nutrition is a key piece of the puzzle. I eat a plant-based diet 5 days per week and include meats the other two days. Changing your diet can seem overwhelming, but there are a plethora of resources that can steer towards success.
